Asbestos cleanup progressing at burned Imperial Tobacco plant

After arson damaged the Imperial Tobacco plant in Greenville, North Carolina last April, it was determined that the plant would have to be demolished. A hazardous materials abatement team is supervising efforts to recover all reusable materials from the asbestos-ridden debris. For example, the 100-year-old bricks are in excellent conditions and will be sold for 45 cents a piece; already 200,000 bricks have been recovered. But recovering the materials has been a dangerous and tedious task, one that must be handled almost completely by hand. Lumber is also being recovered and can be recycled as flooring. All of the materials that cannot be reused must be put in double-lined containers for disposal at a facility certified to take asbestos waste.
