Documentary shows hazards of shipbreaking

A new documentary, “The Last Rites,” gives a view into the lives of laborers in the shipyards of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, where ships go to die. The work of dismantling enormous ocean-going vessels is back breaking. And in the process, workers are exposed to high levels of asbestos and other toxins without protective gear.

Exposure to asbestos causes serious diseases like lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that attacks the membranes surrounding the lungs, heart and abdomen.
