Oak Ridge Nat’l Lab set for environmental cleanup
The Dept of Energy has given its okay to the monumental environmental cleanup that is needed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, about 20 miles west of Knoxville, Tennessee. The national science laboratory and nuclear weapons plant is contaminated with everything from asbestos to radioactive waste. More than 400 buildings will be demolished. Polluted groundwater at the site will be cleaned up as well. Cost estimates for the cleanup range from a low of $9.4 billion to a high of $14.5 billion. The cleanup could start by late 2010 and would be expected to continue until sometime between 2036 and 2039.
