Vacant Indianapolis hospital is an asbestos hazard
A year after the SWAT team used an abandoned Indianapolis hospital near Meridian and 32nd streets for training exercises, the police have announced that the building is a health hazard. No one is allowed to enter the old hospital without protective gear. The building, empty for four years, tested positive for asbestos, mold and other toxic substances. In addition, there are fuel tanks buried under the building, and vandals have stripped much of the interior.
As a precaution, the 35 SWAT team members who spent time in the old hospital are under medical supervision, but a supervisor has said he believes the team may have been wearing gas masks and other safety equipment during the training exercises.
Despite the problems and the need for extensive cleanup of asbestos and other toxins on the site, the City of Indianapolis has decided that it wants to see the land redeveloped and hopes to acquire the property next summer.
