QE2 retires to Dubai
The Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner, or QE2, has taken its last voyage and retired to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It will be gutted to remove all the asbestos and then carefully put back together. The outside of the ship will look the same, and the remodeled ship will retain some of its public rooms in honor of its history and elegance. The 40-year-old “Grand Dame of the Seas” will then start its next life as a floating, luxury hotel with 250 suites, and anchored on a man-made island in the Port of Dubai. Dubai spent $100 million to get the QE2. It will cost an additional $50 million to overhaul the ship. Memorabilia recovered from the ship will become part of a companion museum.
