Vermont officials find increased mesothelioma risk around Belvidere Mountain asbestos mine
According to a new study from the Vermont Department of Health, living near the Belvidere Mountain asbestos mine in Eden and Lowell increases your risk of developing mesothelioma and other serious asbestos-related diseases. The study showed significantly increased risks for both asbestosis and cancer among those living in towns near the mine, even when former mine workers were excluded.
The state is now warning people to stay away from the mine site. The 2,000 acre site has been popular with ATV riders, an activity which can stir up dust and be particularly dangerous in asbestos-contaminated soil.
The state is pursuing federal involvement in additional study of the former asbestos mine, closed since 1993. If the mine is declared a Superfund site, the designation would made additional state and federal money available to clean up the mine site.
