The UK’s Health and Safety Executive reveals that mesothelioma deaths are rising in the construction trades
In the United Kingdom, asbestos kills more people each year that automobile accidents. It is the largest cause of occupational deaths. And the number of asbestos-related deaths among members of the construction trades is continuing to rise although many workers in the trades are unaware that asbestos is a risk to them. Current estimates are that approximately 500,000 non-domestic buildings in the United Kingdom that were constructed or remodeled before 2000 could still contain asbestos.
The UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched Asbestos: The Hidden Killer, an asbestos awareness campaign focused on raising awareness among members of the trades. It is hoped that this campaign will help cut the growing number of deaths from mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. It can take decades for asbestos-related diseases to develop, however, which means that the impact of the campaign will not be apparent for many years.
Presently, one fourth of all asbestos-related deaths in the United Kingdom are among tradesmen such as electricians, plumbers and joiners.
