Mesothelioma sufferer finishes Silicon Valley Marathon
Tom Kaisersatt has completed almost 150 marathons and ultra-marathons in his life. He has devoted himself to staying healthy and, as the founder of San Jose Fit, training others to run or walk their way to health. Incredibly, this year, 68-year-old Tom Kaisersatt finished the Silicon Valley Marathon this year, months after being diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a rare and extremely aggressive asbestos-related cancer than attacks the membranes that surround the lungs, heart or abdomen. As the tumor causes the lining around the lungs to become thick and stiff, lung capacity diminishes and exertion becomes increasingly difficult.
Race officials agreed to let Kaisersatt complete the bulk of the course in the weeks leading up to race day, one or two miles at a time. He completed the last five miles of the 26.2 mile marathon on race day surrounded by “Team Tom”—the many runners he has trained, inspired and encouraged for the last decade.
