On each side of the Tyne, ten thousand snowdrops will be planted as a memorial to all those who have died of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer that effects the membrane lining the lungs, heart or abdomen.
The memorial was organized by the town councils of South Tyneside, Gateshead and North Tyneside along with the Snowdrop Fund, launched in February by the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund (MKMRF) to provide a tribute charity for families affected by mesothelioma to support research into the disease.
The hope is that, when the bulbs come up in the winter, the thousands of flowers will remind people both of those who have been lost to mesothelioma and of our hope to find a cure for the disease.
