Arson at Downey, Calif. dry cleaner causes extensive fire and smoke damage in string of businesses and requires asbestos removal

Businesses are reopening after an arson-caused fire at Plaza Cleaners on April 27th caused serious damage to adjacent Cafe n’ Stuff and California Affordable Insurance. The businesses had initially expected to be closed just a couple of weeks, but asbestos was found in the spaces after the fire, requiring asbestos abatement before other repairs and remodeling could begin. Instead, they have been operating remotely for months while they waited for the asbestos removal and other work to be completed. The cost to Café n’ Stuff was approximately $120,000, and California Affordable Insurance was out between $65,000 and $75,000. Plaza Cleaners continues to sit empty, burned out and closed. No suspected have been named in the arson case.
