Boiler accident injures University of Vermont employee and possibly releases asbestos into the boiler room
The door of a backup boiler at the University of Vermont’s Patrick Gymnasium blew open while an employee was conducting a routine maintenance check. The boiler door struck asbestos-covered pipes, which may have released asbestos fibers into the room. The area surrounding the boiler room was evacuated pending tests for the presence of airborne asbestos, but university and state officials believe that no one outside the boiler room was exposed to asbestos. Asbestos exposure can cause serious illnesses like asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
