Kankakee, Illinois nursing home evacuated because of asbestos danger

The release of asbestos into the ventilation system of the Bourbonnais Terrace nursing home in Kankakee, Illinois has forced the evacuation of almost 200 residents. The Illinois Dept of Public Health ordered the residents be moved out, and nursing home administrators worked with the local fire department to set up temporary shelter and support at the Kankakee County Fairground.

The asbestos was released accidentally into the ventilation system while workers were renovating the facility and tearing out asbestos-containing floor tiles. The nursing home must remain closed until inspectors are able to confirm that the toxic asbestos has been removed from the building.
