Streetcars in Tampa, Florida will soon be asbestos free
Workers for Florida’s Hillsborough County transit system discovered asbestos in some of the streetcars’ electrical components. Officials have ordered that asbestos-containing parts be switched out for new parts as soon as they are available. The total cost of the upgrade is unknown, but one official said he expected it would cost thousands of dollars, and it is expected to be completed in the next few months. Officials declined an offer to do the work offsite for $310,000, but doing the asbestos removal in house could be complicated and expense, too, because handling asbestos requires special precautions to prevent dangerous exposures to any airborne fibers.
