Bilray Demolition Company of Johnston, RI faces $256, 320 penalty for asbestos violations in demolition of former Seaboard Foundry
Bilray Demolition Company faces substantial fines for alleged asbestos violations during demolition of the Seaboard Foundry in Johnston, RI during 2004 and 2005. The company demolished the foundry after a fair at the site, but inspections during the demolition uncovered asbestos-containing materials. The EPA says that Bilray Demolition failed to properly inspect for asbestos prior to starting the demolition or provide the necessary notice to the EPA before beginning work. The company also failed to use the required safety procedures for removing and disposing of the asbestos at the site, creating a risk that people in the area would be exposed to asbestos fibers in the air. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and other serious respiratory problems.
