EPA fines the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for asbestos violations
Just over a year ago, inspectors from the EPA and California Air Resources Board discovered that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power had demolished structures located near Niland, California without giving proper advance notice to the EPA as required by federal asbestos regulations. The notice requirement and other federal asbestos regulations are designed to prevent human exposure to asbestos, which can easily become airborne during renovation or demolition. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause serious disease, including lung cancer and mesothelioma, an especially aggressive asbestos-related cancer that attacks the lining around the lungs, abdomen or heart. The EPA fined the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power $9,030 for violating asbestos regulations under the federal Clean Air Act.
