Cancer awareness bus makes stop in Barstow, California

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is driving home its message by, well, driving. From now to Election Day, the organization’s shrink-wrapped bus, the Fight Back Express, is making stops on a cross-country road trip from California to Washington D.C. to raise awareness about cancer.

Everywhere the bus stops, community members are encouraged to write a message on the side of the bus about their own experiences with cancer. When the bus’s shrink wrap is filled with messages, it is replaced with another. At the end of the trip, all the message-filled wraps will be mounted and presented to Congress in Washington, D.C.

Barstow resident Will Henderson is a 17-year survivor of testicular cancer. Over time, he has grown more involved with the American Cancer Society’s efforts to raise awareness and to motivate politicians to provide greater access to health care for all Americans. When the Fight Back Express came through Barstow, Henderson spoke briefly to the crowd about his own experiences with cancer. But Henderson signed the bus in the name of his father-in-law, who died of mesothelioma, a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
