Mesothelioma families help each other in Portsmouth, England
A pair of sisters in Portsmouth, England decided to do something after their father’s death at 72 from mesothelioma, a fatal cancer caused from working around asbestos. Diane McLellan and Lynne Squibb started up the Hampshire Asbestos Support and Awareness Group to help others secure compensation after developing asbestosis and asbestos-related cancers. The women visit families in their homes and work to connect them with a panel of local lawyers who handle claims involving asbestos exposure.
The sisters also schedule fundraisers to promote research, recently raising £6,000 for the Mick Knighton and June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund. Their support group has helped hundreds of people since it was formed. As explained by a man with asbestosis who has received assistance from the group: “The group has given us so much support. We wouldn’t have known what to do or what we were entitled to without them.”
