Teens near Riverside, New York are having a tough time finding a place to play Wiffle ball. First, the neighbors in Riverside complained about the games next door to their homes. Then, after a new field was set up in Dundee, asbestos abatement signs went up there. Asbestos, cautions the National Cancer Institute, is a dangerous mineral that, when inhaled, can cause lung cancer and mesothelioma. Still, town officials suggest that parents need not worry about their children’s safety. The local school board has retained environmental engineers to monitor the school’s asbestos removal procedures, which reportedly are “in line,” according to Robert Farfaglia, the town’s supervisor of environmental health.
