On August 15, in Kingman, Arizona, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is scheduled to hold an asbestos awareness seminar for contractors and small communities along Route 66. The seminar will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kingman Council Chambers, 310 N. Fourth St. The Route 66 Asbestos Initiative was undertaken to educate contractors and small communities about how to handle asbestos-containing material and to dispose of it properly.
When asbestos is dislodged in renovations, dangerous asbestos fibers may be released into the surrounding breathing space. Should airborne fibers be inhaled by those in the area, they could later develop asbestosis or mesothelioma. The August 15 seminar, which is free, will teach participants the precautions to be followed for asbestos removal during a home remodel or the demolition of a building.
