Newington, Connecticut factory waiting for asbestos cleanup

The town of Newington, Connecticut wishes someone would do something with the decrepit, abandoned National Welding factory on the road that leads into town. The structure is coated with asbestos on the inside and the soil outside is contaminated with petroleum. The building’s owner owes over $1 million in back taxes and the city has filed a foreclosure action. If the city prevails in court, however, then it will be stuck with the cost of demolishing the old factory and cleaning up the site. So city officials are planning to solicit developers to clean up the site for commercial development. An environmental engineer hired by the town has already told the city council that the cost of removing the contamination is more than the property is worth, but still described the task as “doable.”
