The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is closing in on a plan for cleanup of a 27-acre Walpole site contaminated by a series of industrial activities over four centuries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the property was used by different industries, which left behind various hazardous substances, including chromium, arsenic and mercury. From 1920 to 1937, a company called Multibestos used the site for its manufacture of asbestos brake linings. Then, until 1985, Kendall Company used the property for fabric production, which resulted in the discharge of contaminated wastewater. The proposed $13 million cleanup would treat the property’s contaminated groundwater and would excavate and dispose of the contaminated soil. If everything goes according to schedule, the cleanup could begin within two years.
