Asbestos-contaminated dormitory in Harrisonburg, Virginia to be demolished
The wild and crazy Mennonite guys living in Eastern Mennonite University’s Oakwood Dormitory are about to lose their home, temporarily anyway. The dorm, nicknamed “the animal house,” is scheduled for demolition in August 2008 to make way for a bigger, better, asbestos-free facility. The current dorm was built in 1969, has poor ventilation and is contaminated with asbestos floor tiles. The new building will have wireless Internet and flat-screen televisions. Of course, the building will still house the same wacky students, some of whom last year tried to mount the school’s 250-pound stuffed American Bison on the roof. Those hijinks were successful only in sending one boy to the hospital after he fell from the roof.
