David Nicholls, an actor with roles in blockbuster films such as Gladiator and Gangs of New York, has died of mesothelioma. Mr. Nicholls, who was 58, lived in England with his partner, Ms. Julie Connor, and three sons. The actor was exposed to asbestos at the age of fifteen, when he left school for a job in a factory, where he worked with asbestos pipe covering. After leaving the factory, Mr. Nicholls first served in the British Army and then later worked as a police officer before pursuing his acting career.
After developing mesothelioma, Nicholls worked tirelessly to raise funds for mesothelioma research and for promoting awareness about the dangers of asbestos.
