Navelbine® and Platinol® found helpful for mesothelioma

Patients with newly diagnosed non-resectable pleural mesothelioma may benefit from the combination of Navelbine® (vinorelbine) and Platinol® (cisplatin), according to researchers from Denmark. Pleural mesothelioma is a lethal form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure that strikes thousands of U.S. residents each year. The average survival time for victims of pleural mesothelioma is less than one year. Recent studies of the disease suggest that chemotherapy may improve quality of life and prolong a patient’s survival. This study evaluated a chemotherapy regimen of Navelbine and Platinol for the treatment of 54 patients with non-resectable mesothelioma. The one-year survival rate for these patients was 61%, the two-year survival rate was 31%, and the three-year survival rate was 4%. The study’s authors reported that these rates were superior to previous studies with Gemzar-based chemotherapy combinations. The details of this study appeared in an early online publication in the BRITISH JOURNAL OF CANCER.
