French aircraft carrier Clemenceau, contaminated with tons of asbestos, has been searching for a final resting place, where it can be dismantled. The carrier even traveled all the way to India, but its transfer to India’s west coast, site of the world’s largest shipbreaking yard, was blocked. According to a company that helped to partially decontaminate the former warship several years ago, the carrier’s hull contains between 500 and 1,000 tons of the dangerous substance. Until now, no country was willing to dismantle the ship’s asbestos-insulated hull because of the grave health and environmental risks involved. Finally, England has come to France’s rescue: the ship, once the pride of the French navy, will be dealt its final blow by a company called Able UK located in northeast England.
