Minneapolis-St. Paul brownfield sites to receive funding for asbestos cleanup
Several Minneapolis-St. Pail sites will receive brownfield funding for cleanup of asbestos and other hazardous substances. The Met Council approved almost $4 million for 9 brownfield redevelopment projects in the Twin Cities area to redevelop or reuse land that has been contaminated with asbestos or other hazardous materials. The Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Council has awarded nearly $1 million to the old Schmidt Brewery in St. Paul for asbestos cleanup and redevelopment; $887,100 are intended to pay for asbestos and lead-based paint abatement and other decontamination efforts. Redevelopment plans include renovation of the historic bottle house building into affordable rental housing, as well as the construction of retail and commercial space and new townhomes. Other brownfield sites that require asbestos abatement also were awarded funding: Broadway Plaza, Minneapolis received $224,400; Dunwoody Flats, Minneapolis was awarded $161,600; Cent Ventures, St. Paul took $189,000; Commerce Building Phase II, $210,200; and Renaissance Box, St. Paul was given $192,500. The contaminated sites will be transformed into retail and commercial spaces as well as residential areas, including low-income, affordable housing.
