Owner of former Tasmanian asbestos plant predicts that incidence of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases are on the rise

Cement Australia, the new owner of the Railton Cement Factory in Australia, is warning that the number of people suffering asbestos-related diseases will rise. The Tasmanian factory manufactured asbestos building products for forty years from 1947 until 1986. The number of new mesothelioma cases in Tasmania has risen dramatically in the past decade. Given the long latency period of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, Cement Australia expects that the number of workers afflicted with such diseases is just beginning to peak. The company has already made compensation payments to 36 people.
