Hamilton Jordan, White House Chief of Staff under Jimmy Carter, dead of mesothelioma at 63

Hamilton Jordan, who served as President Jimmy Carter’s Chief of Staff, died of mesothelioma on May 20, 2008 at the age of 63. Jordan helped to manage Carter’s election campaign, and in the White House, Jordan worked tirelessly on successful treaties in Panama and the Mideast. Jordan also served as President Carter’s special negotiator on the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979 and 1980. After leaving the world of presidential politics, Jordan married and had children, did strategic planning for startup companies and ran for the U.S. Senate in Georgia. He published a best-selling memoir, No Such Thing As A Bad Day. Jordan battled several forms of cancer before his recent death from mesothelioma. He founded the Georgia Cancer Coalition and, with his wife Dorothy, founded Camp Sunshine in Decatur, Georgia for children with cancer. After his diagnosis of mesothelioma, Jordan started the Hamilton Jordan Mesothelioma Research Fund at the University of Maryland-Baltimore Foundation, University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
