Federal government gives Nashua, New Hampshire $2 million to clean up asbestos

Thanks to U.S. Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a grant of $2 million to the city of Nashua, New Hampshire to clean up asbestos contamination at a city-owned former textile mill. The city seeks to develop the property, which is already home to several small businesses and an art gallery. But the site has been designated a federal brownfield due to its contamination from asbestos and underground storage tanks. Three quarters of the $2 million grant will be used for the difficult task of removing asbestos pipe insulation from a structure known as the Boiler House. The city had already received a $200,000 federal grant last year for the cleanup, but the additional $2 million should be sufficient to take care of resolving the asbestos danger.
