A Jefferson County, Wisconsin man was convicted and sentenced in Jefferson County Circuit Court for illegally failing to remove asbestos before demolishing and burning buildings on his property. The man purchased an old farm and nursing home from the County in March 2005. At that time, he was warned that some of the buildings contained asbestos that would need to be removed before demolition. Further, various government officials instructed the man that he could not burn the demolition debris. Despite this knowledge, the property owner hired contractors to renovate, demolish, and burn the asbestos contaminated buildings. After burning the buildings, the man lost the property to foreclosure. The site is now being cleaned up by a new purchaser.
