Chicago’s Oak Street Beach asbestos study validated by public health agency

The methods used in 2005 to test the asbestos levels present at Chicago’s Oak Street Beach have been validated by the U.S. EPA’s public health agency partner, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. LFR Inc., an Elgin, Ill.-based contractor retained by the Chicago Park District, conducted the initial study to evaluate whether people could be exposed to asbestos while engaged in typical beach activities, such as playing catch, building sandcastles and sunbathing. The new study, which takes a look at prior study results, concludes that the asbestos present in the air at Oak Street Beach does not pose a threat to those enjoying recreational activities there and that the initial study was conducted in accord with EPA methods.
