Use caution when recycling asbestos shingles
Waste management officials in Fargo, North Dakota are seeking advice from the North Dakota Health Department on how to recycle shingles safely. The Department estimates that millions of pounds of shingles will be dumped as a result of last year’s hailstorm. The greatest challenge to recycling the shingles is testing them for asbestos, given that many of the shingles manufactured before 1978 contained asbestos. During the recycling process, shingles are ground up and then melted down. But asbestos-containing shingles cannot be ground up without releasing dangerous asbestos particles into the air.
