Don Pitt, a prominent Australian asbestos expert, warns that efforts by insurance companies to save costs while repairing hundreds of flood-damaged homes in Australia is putting workers at risk of developing mesothelioma in the future. Instead of replacing asbestos-containing walls in these houses, workers are sanding and repainting them. But sanding these asbestos-containing walls is illegal and dangerous. It can be easy to ignore or underestimate the risks of asbestos exposure because it can take decades for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases to develop.
