Washington, D.C. Inspector General says inadequate legislation creates asbestos- and lead-related health risks

The D.C. Inspector General says that the regulation of lead and asbestos removal in Washington, D.C. is ineffective and inadequate and may increase the risk to area residents during renovation projects. The Inspector General’s alert accuses both the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs and the Department of the Environment of failing to protect residents and workers from asbestos and lead exposure. Lead is a neurotoxin that can cause learning disabilities in children. Asbestos exposure causes serious pulmonary disease and cancer such as mesothelioma, which is generally discovered decades after the exposure.
