Residents in Stratford, Connecticut remain concerned about asbestos health risk

Although state and local health officials met recently with Stratford residents to reassure them that toxic asbestos, lead and PCBs from Raymark’s former plant are safely contained, residents remain unconvinced, some wishing they had never bought property in the area. Residents are worried that asbestos and other waste from Raymark could cause cancer, pulmonary disease, birth defects and lead poisoning. The Raybestos ball field is a large toxic dump site covered with a temporary cap, and the proximity of the field worries some residents. Contaminated waste from Raymark’s facility was used as construction fill throughout the town for years, but many local homeowners still don’t know if their property is contaminated. The EPA’s proposal to dig up the waste and move it is being further reviewed by the EPA in light of loud opposition from residents who fear that asbestos waste could become airborne during such a move and expose people to the dangerous fibers.
