Since the fire that gutted three downtown buildings in Corinth, New York in February, piles of rubble remain behind a wood fence. Property owners are still looking for certified asbestos abatement contractors to clean up the contaminated rubble from the site. The clean up will be overseen by the New York Department of Labor and could be completed in as little as a month. But the necessity of using a landfill licensed to receive asbestos means the debris might have to be hauled as far away as Buffalo or Pennsylvania. No progress can be made on rebuilding until the asbestos clean up is completed. Village officials are trying to find grant funds to help the property owners pay for the asbestos removal.
