Brownfields projects fund asbestos removal, help revitalize urban areas

In Meriden, Connecticut, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently spent $1.5 million to remove asbestos and debris from the former International Silver Co. factory to prepare the factory for demolition. Demolition of the factory could cost another $1.5 to $3 million. The factory is one of the city’s two Brownfields projects, which provide funding to reclaim polluted former industrial sites and allow for future development and revitalization of local economies.
