Mambo Development in St. Louis, Missouri has been charged with violations of the federal Clean Air Act, as well as bank fraud and money laundering. The asbestos charges include both paperwork violations (failing to notify the EPA 10 days before asbestos removal was scheduled) and violations in work practice standards that caused the release of asbestos. The investigation was prompted when the St. Louis Air Pollution Control Division got an anonymous letter reporting that unqualified people were removing asbestos pipe insulation at the Ford Building. An inspection by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources found “asbestos debris swept into piles” and “approximately 60 black bags containing dry asbestos material.” The harshest penalties that the contractor faces are related to the charge of bank fraud, however.
