The Santa Cruz SPCA, which took in 100 pets stranded by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, has to leave its fire-damaged building for at least two months while the building is repaired. A defective printer caused the fire, which resulted in thousands of dollars of damage to the building. The most complicated parts of the repairs are dealing with asbestos and mold concerns. Water from fighting the fire pooled under the building, setting up a prime spot for mold to develop. But crews cannot take care of the standing water until asbestos and lead are removed from the building. The Santa Cruz SPCA and its animals will move back in after the building is reported to be safe.
