The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection fined three businesses in Waltham for pollution of the Charles River, as well as possible soil and groundwater contamination. The companies were found to have violated environmental regulations governing handling of asbestos-containing materials as well as regulations governing solid waste management, air quality, hazardous waste management and storm water management. In total the three companies, which share a Calvary Street address, were fined $72,500 and ordered to control run-off from the property by June 30th. The violations were originally discovered in a January 2007 inspection after witnesses reported an oil sheen on the Charles River emanating from the property.
