Connecticut’s Bethel High School is open again after a second asbestos scare in recent weeks caused the school to be closed to staff and students for about a day and a half. Superintendent of Schools Gary Chesley says that the asbestos release occurred on March 4 during renovation work, when air sampling showed asbestos in the air at the school. After the contractor Eagle Environmental cleaned the area, the asbestos levels were within levels permitted by the state for occupancy. However, school district officials remain concerned that the release was not reported to the district until two days after it happened. The Connecticut Department of Public Health is investigating Eagle Environmental’s actions. Regular air monitoring showed asbestos readings climbing again late last week, leading to the school’s closing. Earlier in the renovation project, asbestos was found in fireproofing material inside a wall at the school; but based on air testing, the asbestos did not pose a risk to students or staff.
