Mesothelioma cases in Australia quadruple over two decades

Cases of mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure, have quadrupled in Australia since the mid-1980s, according to statistics reported by the Asbestos Diseases Society. Men account for 85% of all new cases. The organization further stated that the incidence of mesothelioma was not expected to peak until around 2020. The Asbestos Diseases Society called upon the government to increase funding to study the causes and treatment of mesothelioma and to provide funding for the removal of asbestos from Australian homes and workplaces.
