The Australian Asbestos Disease Society has reported that the incidence of mesothelioma in that country has quadrupled in the last 20 years. Men make up 85 percent of new cases of mesothelioma in Australia each year. Mesothelioma, which is caused by exposure to asbestos, is a cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen. The incidence of mesothelioma is not expected to peak until sometime after 2020. The group also called for significantly increasing the investment in research into treatments for mesothelioma, now that researchers are making significant advances but are hampered by “shoestring budgets.”
