Charleston contractor faces criminal charges for illegal dumping of asbestos on his property
A contractor in Charleston has been accused of illegally dumping asbestos on two of his properties. He is alleged to have violated cease and desist orders from the South Carolina Department of Environmental Protection. These orders required that he stop accepting solid waste at his property and that he provide proof to the DEP that he had disposed of asbestos-containing materials properly. Inspectors reported finding chrysotile asbestos on both properties. The contractor, Rodney D. Loftis, Sr., was indicted in August 2007, and the case is scheduled for trial next month. The asbestos dumped on the property is believed to have come from buildings Loftis has demolished in the area. In 2000, Loftis paid $25,000 to settle a DEP lawsuit against him for repeated asbestos violations during building demolitions.
