The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality issued a notice of deficiency against DeSoto Regional Health System saying that the hospital’s administration did not follow the proper procedures in removing asbestos from a construction area. The hospital will not be fined, and the LDEQ says that hospital administrators are cooperating to be sure that proper procedures are in place for the future. Although LDEQ testing found asbestos in an area under renovation at the hospital, it was found before construction work could disturb the asbestos and cause fibers to become airborne. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause serious respiratory diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer.
