Stewartville, Minnesota demolished its old pool, bathhouse and pump house without prior notification to the state. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is now investigating whether the city violated state or federal regulations through its handling of the project. One agency official has reported that, in addition to failing to notify the state before the demolition, the city of Stewartville also failed to complete the required asbestos survey before beginning work. The Stewartville City Administrator has denied knowledge of the permitting and asbestos survey requirements, and he does not believe that the bathhouse and pump house contained asbestos materials. The city plans to use the site of the old pool as a parking lot and to build a new pool in an adjacent site.
