Nonprofit community development organization must pay $450,000 for failing to properly remove asbestos before demolition

In a settlement with Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon, the Community Development Corporation of Kansas City has agreed to pay $450,000 for failing to prepare and contain asbestos materials before demolition at the Citadel Plaza Redevelopment Project in December 2006. The nonprofit received a total of 5 asbestos violations notices for its handling of the demolition. From the total settlement, $100,000 has been allocated for grants to assist other urban developers in Kansas City to properly remove asbestos from residential redevelopment projects. In addition, the Community Development Corporation of Kansas City has agreed to include certain energy-saving features in the Citadel Plaza Redevelopment Project.
