Mining company Cleveland Cliffs abandons separate health study of Minnesota’s Iron Range miners and agrees to support University of Minnesota mesothelioma study
Following criticism from state lawmakers and state health officials, mining company Cleveland Cliffs Corp. has decided not to pursue its plans for an independent health study of its employees in the Minnesota Iron Range. Instead, the company has agreed to share its information on workers and mining operations with researchers conducting the University of Minnesota mesothelioma study of Iron Range miners. The University of Minnesota studey is just getting underway and is widely supported by private organizations and mining companies, as well as the Minnesota Department of Health and the Department of Natural Resources. University officials estimate the study will cost approximately $5.5 million and will take three years or more to complete.
