Medical experts in India speak out against Canada’s asbestos export to developing countries
Medical experts in New Delhi have called Canada’s continuing export of asbestos to developing countries “criminal” and warn that asbestos is killing workers in India. The head of India’s occupational and environmental department, Dr. T.K. Joshi, reports that millions of construction workers and at least a hundred thousand factory workers are exposed to asbestos every day in India. Workers are often not provided with masks by their employers and are not in a position to demand them. Most cases of asbestos-related deaths in India go unreported and almost none are compensated. Asbestos is used in India to make a variety of products from concrete pipes to metal roofing, and one third of this asbestos comes from Canada, with the rest being imported from Zimbabwe, Russia and Kazakhstan. Dr. Joshi calls on the Canadian government to stop the export of asbestos–to stop exporting “misery”–and to oppose the use of asbestos everywhere.
