Concerns arise that students may have inhaled asbestos after basement fire at their Cleveland school

After a basement fire, initial tests of air quality convinced school officials in Cleveland, Ohio to continue holding classes in the school building. But an observer with the Environmental Protection Agency saw asbestos insulation on a 150-foot section of pipe in the school basement and called for additional air testing. The later tests show that asbestos levels at the school are three times “the acceptable level.” Based on the more recent tests, school officials stopped classes and closed the school building. Parents were upset and concerned that their children may have been put at risk. Before the school reopens, there will be cleaning and additional asbestos testing, overseen by the Ohio State Health Department.
